Title Hospital bills
Posted By govinda108 , Dated : 20-Aug-2009 12:54 PM
Experience Dear all,
I have been reading this forum over the past week or so. I wanted to share my experiences with you so that it may be of help for anyone in the future.

My m-i-l (72 yrs) was visiting us for 6 months. Towards the end of her stay, she developed an urinary tract infection that quickly escalated to high fever, shivering, etc. We had to call an ambulance and take her to a hospital. She was given antibiotics, IV, etc, but due to her age, she took 2 days to recover. We took seven corners inbound usa insurance which provided minimal coverage. The hospital bill was ~18K of which the insurance only paid 10%.
I was trying to see what the best option was to address this situation, given that our savings are almost zero. Finally we decided to take this head-on. We went to the hospital billing department the day after we received this final bill and pleaded with them to reduce or waive the charges since we are unable to pay them. We told them that we can pay 1K max. They contacted the CFO who immediately waived the charges. He was surprised that we even came and talked to him, since we are not technically obligated to pay the bill (It was addressed to my mil). We thank the all merciful Lord Krishna for his compassion. We also wanted to share our lessons learned -
1. If a person is old and susceptible to such illnesses, think about the insurance/costs before inviting them. If one needs to invite them here, one should get a really comprehensive policy.
2. If a situation like ours does actually happen, then it is best to take this up with the hospital directly. Not responding may actually be worse than pleading with the hospital for a waiver.
3. Fixed coverage plans like inbound usa cover almost nothing, so there is no point in banking on them for coverage. We fought tooth and nail with them with the claims, but to no avail.

Title Great experience at Visitorscoverage.com,
Posted By Gagan , Dated : 20-May-2008 11:24 AM
Experience I purchased insurance for my one of my parent, about 2 months months ago from www.visitorscoverage.com.

I had to go to emergency, just after a day of their arrival, as my mom fainted at a shopping mall, I called the ambulance , and while waiting for the ambulance which took about 30 min. to reach, I thought of calling insurance company and ask for the process of using insurance. I was carrying blackberry so I pulled the email where I had visitorscoverage tel number and called, the customer support person Rajeev, was extremely helpful and provided me help and comforted me in that situation, One thing I am greatly impressed that he proactively called me at least 4 time same evening asking about my Moms help. I did not have any problem at hospital. fortunately there was nothing serious , and she got discharged next day, according to Dr. she was exhausted/ tired resulted.

( I think, It was a bad idea to take aged parents to mall and such a tiring thing the very next day, I should have give some time for them to settle ..and come out of the stress/jetleg of that long journey, any way lesson learned)

I was told to send the claim information soon to insurance company so the process can start. I have already got the paramedics/ambulance bill cleared by insurance company, but I am yet to see the hospital bill, but I am told it will be taken care as per the policy, I am hopeful that I wont have much hassle , lets see
But I am pleased with visitorscoverage so far.

Title Never Buy Health insurance from ICICI Lombard
Posted By Harvinder Khurana , Dated : 01-Apr-2008 06:11 PM
Experience I took insurance from ICICI Lombard from their website icicilombard.com . They charged my Credit Card for more than the specified amount of the premium. The salesrep don't tell everything about the policy when selling. In my case I was advised that I should take 100K coverage for my parents both of them are more than 53 years old. When I was issued the policy I came to know that if the insured is more than 53 years old the policy has limitation for coverage called sub policy. The covered amount is ridiculous as per US standards. I was told I can cancel the polcy anytime and get the unused money back. When I tried to cancel the policy they told me a new clause that the policy can't be cancelled withing 30 days of expiry.
My father was hospitalized and I submitted the claim to this insurance company. They denied the whole claim mentioning that the policy is not valid.

Please never buy insurance from ICICI Lombard.
